What is HOPE?

In today’s world, the word hope can mean many different things to many people. But for Christians, the definition of hope, one that is grounded in the Gospel, is clear.

Biblical hope is anchored in the character and promises of God. It is a confident assurance in God’s faithfulness, even when circumstances seem bleak. The apostle Paul describes this hope as, “an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” —Hebrews 6:19.

Unlike worldly hope, which is often based on uncertain outcomes, Biblical hope is grounded in the unchanging nature of God.  C.S. Lewis writes, “Hope is one of the Theological virtues. This means that a continual looking forward to the eternal world is not (as some modern people think) a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do.” It is by reflecting often on the joys, beauties, and satisfactions of eternal life in the world to come that we find a hope that empowers us to live fully today.

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”  —Colossians 3:1-4 (ESV)

Hope = Antidote for Despair

Hope is a powerful antidote for despair, offering light in the darkest times. It is rooted in God’s character and promises, sustained by His Spirit, and lived out in the daily lives of believers. To someone in the depths of despair, Biblical hope offers a lifeline. It acknowledges the reality of suffering while pointing to a greater reality beyond current circumstances. Hope coexists with pain, providing strength to endure. The Psalmist expresses this tension, crying out, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” Psalm 42:5.

For those feeling hopeless, the message of Biblical hope is clear: God sees, God cares, and God is working, even when we cannot see it.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

For the Christian, hope is not self-generated, like the world often encourages, but is a gift from God— His promises and the assurance of His victory. When we live out this gift of Hope it transforms us— our actions and our perspective.

Hope Lived Out

South Sudan’s ongoing civil war has resulted in widespread displacement and humanitarian crises. The combination of violent conflict and severe climate conditions has made life incredibly challenging for its citizens, including Christians who face persecution from various factions.

Perseverance in Trials

Hope enables believers to endure difficulties with patience and steadfastness. “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint.” (Romans 5:3-5)

Active Waiting

Biblical hope is not passive but involves active anticipation. Believers are called to, “be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” (Romans 12:12)

Courageous Witness

Hope emboldens believers to share their faith. “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” (1 Peter 3:15)

Hope, Biblical hope, is not just for the future but transforms our present, enabling us to live with purpose and joy amidst life’s challenges. In the words of Charles Spurgeon, “Hope itself is like a star- not to be seen in the sunshine of prosperity, and only to be discovered in the night of adversity.”

Give a Gift with Purpose

In a world often darkened by despair, poverty, and hopelessness, you have the opportunity to restore hope by providing a gift with the purpose of sharing the Gospel to those who have never heard it. You’re not just making a donationyou’re helping people understand God’s love, joy, and peace so they can live life fully today.
