School Feeding Program in South Sudan: How One Church Sparked Hope

The hunger crisis in South Sudan is one of the worst in the world. Over half the population faces food insecurity, and more than 2.3 million children are at risk of acute malnutrition. Hunger robs children of health, education, and even childhood itself.

At Petros Network, we believe that when you plant a church, you plant hope. That vision led us to launch a school feeding program in partnership with Convoy of Hope, right where a new church had been planted.

Why a School Feeding Program Matters in South Sudan

For many children in South Sudan, the meal they receive at school is the only meal they will eat in a day. On weekends, many go without food altogether. Malnutrition doesn’t just stunt growth—it cripples a child’s ability to learn and thrive.

By linking our church planting strategy to a school feeding program, we bring both spiritual and physical nourishment to the same community. The church becomes a hub of transformation, while the school becomes a place of hope.

Why We Chose This School

Our church planter noticed something heartbreaking: classrooms were quiet, children were too weak to learn, and many stopped attending altogether. When asked, the answer was simple—they were too hungry to come to school.

That’s why Petros Network intentionally selected a school where a new church had just been planted. By bringing the Gospel of Jesus alongside a school feeding program, the church became more than a place of worship—it became the center of community life, health, and joy.

The Power of One Daily Meal

THE TRANSFORMATION IS PROFUND

  • Children are now eager to attend school, knowing they will receive food.
  • Test scores are improving because nourished children can concentrate and learn.
  • Classrooms are full of energy, and children are running, laughing, and even joining sports teams.

OUR NUTRITION PROGRAM FOLLOWS CLEAR EXCHANGE GOALS

  • 5–6 carbohydrate exchanges for energy
  • 3–4 protein exchanges for growth and strength
  • 1–2 fat exchanges for healthy development

AND HERE IS THE REMARKABLE PART

  • It costs just $0.45 per meal.
  • For $12, a child can be fed at school for an entire month.
  • For $144, a child is nourished for a full year.

From Silence to Joy: A Story of Change

On our first visit, the schoolyard was silent. No smiles. No games. Hunger had stolen the joy of childhood.

Today, the transformation is unmistakable. Children are laughing, running, and playing football in the dust. The joy of being fed has become the joy of being a child again.

This is what we call Redemptive Lift—when communities rise spiritually and physically because the Church stepped in with love and action.

Why Your Support Matters

At Petros Network, we believe that solving the hunger crisis in South Sudan requires both immediate relief and long-term sustainability. That’s why, alongside school meals, we are also multiplying FAITH Farms (Food Always in the Home)—providing families with the skills and resources to grow their own food.

When you give, you’re not just providing a plate of food. You’re fueling education, restoring health, and strengthening faith. You’re showing children that they are seen, loved, and not forgotten.
