The Grit Behind the Grin – A Mother’s Day Collection

When we met Rose, her husband had already left. She was raising eight children alone: eight mouths to feed plus her own, on one meal a day. Water carried from the river. School fees she couldn’t cover. Medical bills that left nothing to save.

She carried it the best she could. Because that’s what mothers do.

“I felt so bad. Feeding eight children as a single mother, the medical bills left me with nothing to save for the future.”

A Circle That Changed Everything

Through her local church, Rose was invited to join a Petros Network Women’s savings group. She didn’t know what to expect. What she found was a table where she belonged — a circle of women who refused to let her sit alone in her struggle.

Something in her began to shift.

“Through this group of women, I recognized I am not alone. We need each other.”

The Stove Became the Turning Point

With the microgrant she received through the program, Rose did something practical and deeply personal. She bought a stove — because she loves to bake bread.

It sounds simple. But in Inkas village, that stove became a turning point. Now the smell of fresh bread drifts through the marketplace each morning — and people follow it. Her stand draws a crowd. Some days, she can’t bake fast enough to meet the demand.

She credits something unexpected for her growth: the communication skills she learned in the program. The confidence to negotiate. To greet customers. To advocate for herself and her children. To speak up where she had once gone quiet.

Now the smell of fresh bread drifts through the marketplace each morning, and people follow it. Rose’s passion became a business. And her children are watching their mother rise.

“My life was full of trauma and ignorance. Now I am free from trauma and covered with the joy of community, and my children are supported in every basic need.”

The Ripple Doesn’t Stop With Her

The thorns are still part of her story. She’ll never forget them. But through a circle of women and her local church, Rose is rising — and she’s just getting started.

What’s happening in Rose’s life doesn’t stop with her. As she grows, her family is strengthened, and so is the church that first walked alongside her.

What Now?

Across East Africa hundreds of women are standing where Rose once stood — determined, faithful, and ready. What they need now is a circle to come alongside them.
