Church Planting In An Urban Context

We believe UMI is God’s plan for us to reach beyond the spheres of conventional church.

Petros Network, as a church planting movement, has planted thousands of churches in rural villages in the developing world. Early in our history we began asking the question, “What about our local city?” Using the same missionary mindset as church planters in the developing world, we began to look at our city through new eyes to reframe and retool our traditional thinking to form the Urban Missions Initiative. With God’s help, the Urban Missions Initiative’s incarnational, neighborhood-centric model will work in any setting, in any culture, and in any city. As Jesus said, “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” (Matthew 16:18)

THE UMI STRATEGY

We believe UMI is God’s battle plan to reach a culture that is increasingly resistant to the gospel.

“I am going to breathe life into Portland. Do you want to be a part of that?”

This was the invitation that Mark & Tracy, Cultural Architects of the Urban Missions Initiative, felt in their hearts as they prayed about coming to Portland to plant a church.

As the Segers were to soon find out, planting yet another church in Portland using traditional methods would not yield the kind of fruit they were anticipating when they arrived. After launching a church with a team that had been imported from outside the city, it imploded within six months. Mark and Tracy’s dream had just died. Or so it seemed…

URBAN MISSIONS INITIATIVE

Without large budgets, big buildings and seminary trained leaders, a UMI plant is light, mobile and “easily” reproducible. Without compromising the gospel but creatively releasing the gospel messenger, the Urban Missions Initiative incarnates the life and hope of Jesus within communities that have excluded God from their worldview and have pushed the church to the edges of relevance.
